Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology (BREEAM)

A BREEAM assessment evaluates the procurement, design, construction, and operation of a development against a range of targets based on performance benchmarks.

Focusing on the sustainability of the planning, design, construction, and management of the project.

Sustainable Values:

  • Energy
  • Water
  • Land use and ecology
  • Waste
  • Pollution
  • Transport
  • Materials
  • Management
  • Health and wellbeing

Each category focuses on a factor aiming to reduce carbon emissions: low-impact design, adaptation to climate change, ecological value, and biodiversity protection. An assessment is carried out on the scheme, and each of the criteria is scored and then multiplied by a weighting. A design stage and post-construction assessment are carried out.

The BREEAM rating is calculated, and depending on the percentage achieved, the below rating is granted.

What are the benefits of BREEAM?

BREEAM inspires sustainable development that enhances the well-being of the people who live and work in them. The built environment accounts for 38% of global carbon emissions; a BREEAM rating demonstrates a significant reduction in carbon emissions that preserves and improves the natural environment. A development with a BREEAM rating may increase the capital gain of the development and reduce the running costs compared to a traditional development.
